Newstead Abbey.
"This Abbey was founded in the year 1170, as a Priory of Black
Canons, and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Through successive reigns
it continued a religious house down to the time of Henry the Eighth,
who closed the doors, January 1st, 1539. In the year 1540, by letters
patent, it passed into the family of Sir John Byron, and
continued in the family of the Byrons down to the time of the noble poet.
When it came into his possession, his great uncle had felled all the
noble oaks, destroyed the finest herds of deer, and, in short, denuded
the estate of every thing he could." Extract from "Newstead Abbey" (Open Library).
